Procedure for charging lithium-ion batteries for e-bikes and e-scooters
Purpose
The purpose of the procedure is to reduce the consequence and probability of fire caused by charging lithium batteries for electric bicycles and electric scooters
Scope and anchoring
Guidelines for fire protection is guideline for this procedure.
Responsibility
Line manager:
- Is responsible for this procedure being made known and followed by its own unit.
- Carry out the necessary risk assessment for the relevant area.
Employees and students are responsible for following the description in the procedure.
Organization and implementation
Charging area requirements
- Charging should only take place in rooms that are well ventilated and have a fire detector.
- Charging must take place on a fire-proof surface and not on a heated floor.
- The charging room must have an available extinguishing agent, such as a fire hose or extinguisher.
- Preferably charge in a room with a sprinkler system.
Do not charge in the office, office landscape, common room, or a room that is part of an escape route.
Precautionary rules
- Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging.
- Use original charger.
- Replace damaged equipment.
- Stop charging if there are sounds, smells or abnormal heating.
- Consider timers to avoid charging at night and on weekend.
- When using lockable, fire-proof charging cabinets, these should be placed so that they easily can be transported out by the fire service in the event of a fire.
Risk assessment requirements if the procedure is not followed
If the procedure is deviated from, there must be a written documentation of a completed risk assassment for the relevant area. Risk assessment is done in cooperation with The Property Division.
