This page covers regulations and guidelines for students at the Faculty of Natural Sciences (NV). Many of the master programmes have specific rules and regulations, but there are also some general rules/regulations that apply to all master students at the faculty.
Master thesis agreement
The master's agreement is a formalization of the agreement between the master student, the supervisor, and the department. It dictates the rights and responsibilities of each part.

Language
Master's thesis is written in English or a Scandinavian language.
• Master's thesis written in Norwegian or Scandinavian must also have an abstract in English.
• Master's thesis written in a non-Scandinavian language must also have an abstract in Norwegian.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism means that you publish other people’s work as your own. Plagiarism is regarded as cheating and is strictly forbidden.

Deadline extension
You may have the right to extend the deadline if you are unable to submit the thesis before the agreed deadline.
If your need is due to health issues you need documentation from a health professional. If your need is due to other problems/issues outside of your control, talk to your supervisor before applying for an extension. To apply for an extension you need to justify and document the reason for your needs and specify the time of extension applied for.

You must submit your master agreement, risk assessment and project description by 20th of January your 2nd semester. Further information about this can be found in the Teams group.
Study desk at the department of Biology
1st year students can apply for clean desk. 2nd year students can apply for an assigned study desk. Your main supervisor must be affiliated with the Biology department for you to qualify for a study desk.

Thesis work
Depending on your supervisor/project you write a master thesis of either 30 or 60 ECTS.
- 60 ECTS thesis can be written with a supervisor at the department of Biology, Biotechnology and Food Science or Biological Sciences in Ålesund.
- 30 ECTS thesis can be written with a supervisor at the department of Marine Technology

You must submit the master agreement in the semester prior to when you plan on starting work on the thesis project. Your thesis project can be undertaken at either the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Science or Department of Biological Sciences Ålesund.
Note that the course code for your master thesis depends on which department your supervisor is affiliated with. If you have found an external project and supervisor you also need to find an internal supervisor from the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, or the Department of Biology.
Study desk at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science
1st year MSBIOTECH/4th year MBIOT5 students can apply for access to our reading rooms with clean desk. 2nd year MSBIOTECH/5th year MBIOT5 students can apply for an assigned study desk. More information on how to apply and regulations is given at the beginning of the autumn semester, otherwise contact your student advisor.
Special syllabus
Special syllabus is an individual theoretical syllabus with relevance to the master's thesis. The syllabus is put together in conference with your supervisor, and must be approved by the department. The application for special syllabus should be sent to the study adviser no later than 4 weeks before submitting the master's thesis.
NB! Students who write their thesis at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science can replace BT3091 Special Syllabus for Master Thesis with an ordinary elective course.

Language requirements in master's theses
Study desks
Students working on specialization projects and/or master theses can apply to have a fixed seat in reading halls in either the Berg-building or Kjemi 2 at Gløshaugen. Which building you receive a desk in usually depends on where your supervisor sits or where your main lab work will be done. More information on how to apply is given at the start of the autumn semester.
If you are starting your specialization project or master thesis outside of the standard time period, contact the study advisor for your study programme for more information on available desks.
