Using AI tools in student papers

It is permitted to use AI as a tool when working on student assignments. If you use AI tools, you can describe your use either in your methodology chapter, in a separate paragraph, or in a dedicated form. See "Describe your use of artificial intelligence" below for an example description.

You as a student are responsible for assessing how AI tools are used in your student paper. Make sure that your student paper contains enough critical reflection. Be thorough when referring to AI tools and use them only as support material.

Student papers are independent written assignments. All are assessed on the same assessment criteria. This is regardless of whether or not you use AI tools as support material.

Keep in mind that language models such as ChatGPT cannot be cited for facts. Use original sources.

Describing your use of artificial intelligence involves explaining what you have used and in what ways. This can either be placed in the methodology section of your text, if you have used artificial intelligence in your scientific work (such as in literature searches, data processing, or analytical work) – or in a separate paragraph at the end of your text, before the reference list, if you have primarily used artificial intelligence to get input on language, form, and style.

This paragraph could, for example, be titled: “Description of Use of Artificial Intelligence”, and might look like this:

"In working on this assignment, I have used artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the following ways: I used [name of AI tool, e.g., Copilot] to assist with idea development and structuring of the text. AI was used to suggest phrasing and provide language improvements, but all content has been reviewed, edited, and academically assessed by me. AI was not used to generate entire paragraphs or to answer the assignment in its entirety. I have also not uploaded personal data or sensitive information into the AI tool. I am solely responsible for the academic content of the assignment."

It is also possible to include a copy of the actual conversation log with the AI tool as an appendix, but discuss with your instructor whether this is necessary.

As a general rule, chatbots like Copilot and ChatGPT should not be referenced in the same way as knowledge sources, as they should neither be the basis for knowledge or facts, nor be the source of generated text.

Certain faculties have adopted guidelines for the use of AI tools in bachelor's and master's theses. Check with your department or faculty if this is the case in the course you are enrolled in.

Students enrolled in courses with these guidelines are asked to upload an AI declaration that describes how AI tools have been used in student papers. The declaration is uploaded in addition to your paper/attachments in Inspera. You can find the declaration form in the question set where you hand in your student paper.

The purpose of declaration form is to explain how you used AI tools when writing your paper. This is to help you become more aware of your own use of AI as a student, and to inform readers about how you have used AI tools.

Fill out the AI declaration form that is relevant to your subject and uploaded it as a separate file upload in Inspera. Contact your faculty if you are unsure which AI declaration to use for your subject.

Information for graders

It is not possible to use language models like ChatGPT or Copilot to translate exam answers for grading. This is because the language model can change the text, as it is based on probability calculations and does not understand the content.

The data on which the models are trained may be incomplete, and nuances in the original text may be lost. This can affect the content of the translation and thus the answer itself.

Legally, an exam answer is a copyrighted work, and it is not permitted to use AI to translate it. It is also possible that the student includes sensitive personal data in the answer, which the grader will not be aware of until the translation is done

Certain faculties have adopted guidelines for the use of AI tools in student papers. Check with your department or faculty whether this applies to the courses you are grading.

If this is the case in your course, the students will be asked to hand in an AI declaration form where they explain how they used AI tools in their thesis. The AI declaration form is uploaded as a separate file upload in Inspera Assessment.

A declaration form where students explain how they used AI in their thesis shall not be included in the determination of grades. The purpose of the AI declaration form is to help students become more aware of their use of AI in their work, and to inform readers about how you have used AI tools.

Most students will submit an AI declaration form when handing in their thesis, but keep in mind that NTNU has no authority to reject an assignment that lacks an AI declaration form. This means that all students must be graded, regardless of whether they submit a AI declaration form or not.
