Two weeks of leave
As a father or co-mother, you have the right to two weeks of leave to assist the mother. If the child's parents are separated, the leave may be carried out by another person assisting the mother.
In connection with birth
The leave must be taken in connection with the birth and must be completed no later than 14 days after the mother comes home from the hospital.
The leave should usually be taken continuously, but you can also split it so you're present one or a few days in connection with the birth, and use the remaining days after the mother goes home from the hospital.
Additional to parental leave
Leave for childcare is in addition to your parental leave.
Adoption and foster care
Adoptive parents and foster parents also have the right to two weeks of leave for childcare when they assume responsibility to care for the child. This does not apply when adopting a stepchild or if the child is more than 15 years old.
How to apply
You apply for leave in the Self-service portal. Submit a request for absence and select "Paid birthcare leave 2 wk" as the absence type.
