Concerning childbirth, you as a father or co-mother have the right to two weeks of leave to assist the mother. If the child's parents are separated, the leave may be carried out by another person assisting the mother.

You must begin your leave in connection with the birth, and it must be finished at the latest 14 days after the mother has gone home from the hospital.

Leave to care for a child in connection with childbirth is normally used consecutively, but you can also split it so you're present one or a few days in connection with the birth, and use the remaining days after the mother goes home from the hospital.

Leave for childcare is in addition to your parental leave rights.

How to apply

You apply for this leave in the Self-service portal. Submit a request for absence, using "Paid birthcare leave 2 wk" as the absence type.

Guide: Requests for absence (dfo.no)

Adoptive parents and foster parents also have the right to two weeks of leave for childcare when they assume responsibility to care for the child. This does not apply when adopting a stepchild or if the child is more than 15 years old.
