All users should follow the guidelines outlined in Working with fume cupboards.

Performing a self-check of the fume cupboard

The person checking the fume cupboard should have received training. Self-check can be performed by using the app "Lydia AO".

Tasks for self-checking fume cupboards:

  • A self-check of the fume cupboards at the unit should be performed at least once a year. A risk assessment will indicate whether they need to be check more often.
  • Measure the air flow rate with an approved and calibrated anemometer. An anemometer should be available at every faculty.
  • We recommend using a thermal anemometer with accuracy of at least +-3% or +- 0,1 m/s in the interval 0,15 - 1,0 m/s or better.
  • Label cupboards that don’t meet the safety requirements with avtrekksskap.pdf|varselsetikett (pdf).
  • Warn the line leader if the alarm function or the air flow rate in the cupboard does not meet the safety requirments.
  • Sign for completed self-check on the check sheet.
  • Register the data from the self-check in the central database (FDV system). An action will be set up automatically if a malfunction is reported. If you don’t have access to the FDV system, contact the Operations division.

Roles and responsibilities for self-checks

See roles and responsibilities for fume cupboards. (in Norwegian)

Yearly external technical check

NTNU has a service agreement with an external company that performs yearly checks of the fume cupboards. The Operations division enters and keeps up the agreement. See the list of tasks performed in an external technical check (pdf, in Norwegian)

  • The check is based in the requirements given in standard NS-EN 14175-4 (Fume cupboards. Part 4: On-site test methods). Find the standard for fume cupboards (requires login to the NTNU network).
  • The results of the technical check are documented in NTNU’s central database (the FDV system). The Operations division maintains this.
  • The unit should be warned at least 14 days prior to the technical check. The faculty’s HSE advisor/coordinator is responsible for coordinating and informing of the check.
  • Completed checks should be documented on a separate sheet attached to each cupboard.
  • The cupboard will be labelled with a warning if discrepancies are found so that the cupboard so longer fulfils the safety requirements. Actions and reporting should follow the routines documented in Actions and reporting in the case of problems with fume cupboards.
  • Adjustments are a part of the technical check. If discrepancies are found that require maintenance outside of what is included in the check, the line leader at the unit needs to approve the additional maintenance.
