Getting started: Application for admission

NB! It is important that the application for admission is submitted immidiately after arrival, in order to meet the deadline for admission within 3 months.

  1. Deliver your copies of 1) application, see template on PhD forms - IV and 2) attachments with sertificates etc. in two separate PDF files via EPT's PhD contact person. You may be asked to show the original documents, make sure to have them available.
  2. Wait for your final approval from the doctoral committee at the Faculty of Engineering (IV Faculty), they meet about three times in the semester. The admission letter will be sent directly to you and to EPT's PhD contact person about two weeks after the meeting.

Underway

Academic training

  • The plan for academic training must consist of a minimum of 34 credits.
    • The course IFEL8000 (4 credits) is mandatory for all PhD candidates at the IV Faculty
    • 20 credits are to be taken as established PhD level courses.
    • The remaining 10 credits can be filled with an Individual Study Syllabus (see below) or advanced master courses. The passing grade for PhD candidates taking master courses is A or B
  • In case of Individual Study Syllabus: An Individual Study Syllabus must be approved by your supervisor and have a minimum of 3 credits, and should not overlap with existing courses.
    • The syllabus must be on a minimum Master level.
    • The syllabus can be approved as part of the 10 credits that is not required to be on a PhD level.

Mid-term Evaluation

12-18 months after your admission to the PhD programme, you are obliged to give a presentation which will be evaluated by the head of research group, your main supervisor and an external representative. See routine description and evaluation form on the IV faculty's page PhD forms - IV.

Delays

As you can see from the pages on supervision, you have a duty to keep your supervisor informed of any matters of significance for your progress. Here you will find more information on the other things you should do in cases of delay. There are Faculty-specific guidelines for the IV Faculty that must be followed, the application form for extension of study period is available at PhD forms - IV.

Completion

This is an overview of local guidelines at EPT, which are complimentary to NTNU's guidelines available on the page PhD 1-2-3: Completion:

  1. Fill out the form "Application for assessment of thesis", downloadable at PhD forms - IV, and submit the application via the EPT PhD contact person.
  2. Fill out the author's agreement to authorise the Library to publish your thesis OA. E-mail a copy of the agreement to the EPT PhD contact person.
  3. Register your thesis in Cristin. Make sure to register both the papers in your thesis (including all authors and co-authors) as well as the thesis itself as a separate entry.
  4. The thesis defence is held approximately 3 months after submission, see info below on EPT's guidelines for printing, reception after the thesis defence and celebratory dinner.

Print your thesis

The thesis should be printed and ready at least 3,5 weeks before the defence. We recommend that you print 30-40 copies of your thesis. Four (4) copies of your thesis must be submitted to the NTNU archives, please contact the EPT PhD contact person to get info on how to deliver the printed copies. The Department will cover printing expenses up to 15 000 NOK. Any expenses exceeding this you will have to pay for yourself. For more info, see the page Printing your thesis.

Reception after the thesis defence

There will be a small reception with snacks and refreshments directly after the thesis defence and after the assessment committee is finished with their work. This is usually held in either the social room at Strømningsteknisk in floor no. 1, Kolbjørn Hejes v. 2, or in the cafeteria in Varmeteknisk in floor no. 6, Kolbjørn Hejes vei 1D. Employees affiliated with the Waterpower laboratory ususally hold the reception in the Waterpower lab lunch room in the floor no. 2. Employees affiliated with the Industrial Ecology Programme may choose if they want the reception in their building.

Celebratory dinner

The Department will cover expences up to 15 000 NOK for the celebratory dinner on the day of your thesis defence. Any costs exceeding this, you will have to pay for yourself. You are free to choose the dinner location, and to invite anyone you would like to attend. Your supervisors and the members of the assessment committee must be invited. Please notify the EPT PhD contact person about the dinner location.

Diploma

From 1 June 2023 you will get a digital diploma for your PhD Degree, but you may order a paper version if you like. Guide on how to get your diploma is available on the page Diplomas. Please note that you need an electronic id, if you are having any trouble with this due to non-Norwegian citizenship etc you may contact the IV Faculty via vitnemal@iv.ntnu.no.
