Admission

As the main supervisor you must make sure that the new PhD candidate submits the application for admission to PhD in time. There are certain deadlines that must be met. The candidate will not be entered into the Common Student System without this formal admission.

Underway

Take a look at PhD candidate supervision.

Mid-term evaluation

15 - 18 months after the candidate's admission to the PhD programme, the candidate is obliged to give a presentation which will be evaluated by the head of research group, main supervisor and an external representative. Routine description and evaluation form: PhD forms - IV.

Completion

Here is a check-list for you as main supervisor for a PhD candidate at EPT:

  1. Make sure that the thesis is worthy of defence
  2. Make sure that the candidate is informed about the process for PhD completion and that the candidate gets in touch with EPT’s PhD contact person
  3. Recommend opponents / assessment commitee for the defence via EPT’s PhD contact person. Use the form "Appointment of assessment committee" available at PhD forms – IV. Follow the criterias described in section 14. “Appointment of an evaluation committee" in the document “Regulations concerning the philosophiae doctor degree (PhD) at NTNU with supplementary regulations for IV”, available at PhD forms – IV.
  4. We prioritize opponents from Europe, who can travel easy and cheap to Norway. We want a maximum of one opponent from outside Europe and we cover a maximum of two overnight stays, as long as there is nothing special due to climate, economy and sustainability.
  5. Find a date for the thesis defence together with the opponents
  6. Notify EPT’s PhD contact person about the date for the thesis defence
  7. We give one gift from the Department, from the head of the Department. If desired to give something beyond this, from the research group it must be taken from the groups' own budget.
