Educational leave

If you have been employed for the past 3 years, and an employee at NTNU for the past 2 years, you are entitled to full-time or part-time leave for educational purposes for up to 3 years. For up to one year among these, your employer may grant you paid education leave in cases where:

  • Further education and/or post-graduate studies are necessary for the organization
  • Further education and/or post-graduate studies are necessary to qualify the employee to continue his/her position or work within the organization, and such education is an integrated part of the working conditions
  • Further education and/or post- graduate studies are necessary for the employee to continue working as a government employee

The employer decide whether further education and/or post – graduate studies are necessary.

Study and examination day

You are entitled to 1 examination- or study day per pr. 2 credits. The employee may only use study days as preparation in direct connection with examinations. The employee and employer agree upon in advance, when such study- and examination days are to take place.

If you are attending a study program that is relevant or beneficial to NTNU or your position, you are entitled to 21 paid study- or examination days during an academic year. If your study program is of little or no relevance for NTNU or your position, you are entitled to a maximum of 7 paid study- or examination days during an academic year.

Please note that the right to paid study and exam leave only applies to employees who are taking further education or post-graduate studies. Employees who are in basic education do not have the right to paid leave for study or exam days. Basic education is generally defined as your first education up to and including the master's level.

If you are a student with a part-time job alongside your studies, you are not entitled to paid leave from your part-time job in connection with exams. However, your employer must adjust the work schedule so that you can take unpaid leave to complete your exams.

Study and exam leave is normally not granted for doctoral dissertations, PhD defenses, or similar.

If you receive a grant to cover essential living expenses (for example, from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund – Lånekassen), you are only entitled to unpaid study and exam leave. This also applies to continuing and further education.
