Master's Theses at IDI

IDI contributes to several master's theses at NTNU. On this page, you will find information about:

Information about the other master's theses can be found on other pages:

How to Choose a Master's Thesis

There are several ways to start your master's thesis. Most will either build on a specialization project, a preparatory project, write a thesis given by a supervisor, or write a thesis in collaboration with a company.

If you wish to continue working on your specialization project or preparatory project, you should arrange this with your supervisor and complete a master's agreement based on it.

If you do not wish to build on your specialization project or preparatory project, take a look in the project database to find a new thesis topic you might be interested in working on.

When you have found a topic that looks interesting, contact the relevant supervisor to check if this is a suitable project for you and to arrange a collaboration.

You should arrange your master's thesis with a supervisor during the autumn semester.

The main supervisor must be employed at IDI.

If you wish to write a master's thesis in collaboration with a company, you are responsible for contacting the company and making an agreement.

Ways to get in touch with companies:

  • The student association for your study program
  • NTNU Bridge (NTNU's official careers portal between NTNU students and employers)

If you are writing a master's thesis with a company, you must submit a standard agreement in addition to the master's agreement. See below.

Signing a Master's Agreement

Once you have made an agreement with your supervisor and/or company, you must complete an agreement for the work to be done.

The deadline for submitting the master's agreement is 15th January.

If you have questions about the master's agreement or the standard agreement, please contact studier@idi.ntnu.no.

The master's agreement is completed and submitted in SharePoint. For more information, see: "Filling out the master agreement" (Innsida).

If you are writing a master's thesis given by a supervisor, you only need to complete and sign the master's agreement.

Computer Science: To get your master's agreement approved, you must have completed your internship, passed your specialization project, and have no more than two courses remaining from previous years.

If you are writing a master's thesis in collaboration with a company, you and the company must sign a standard agreement. This agreement is in addition to your master's agreement. The standard agreement is generated along with your master's agreement in SharePoint.

Information about the standard agreement can be found at: "Student and business cooperative agreements" (Innsida).

Writing your master's thesis

On the page "Writing and Submitting your master's thesis" you will find information, templates, and tools for working on your master's thesis.

If you experience challenges with collaboration with your supervisor, it is important that you contact the academic administration at IDI as soon as possible at studier@idi.ntnu.no.

Please note that the IE faculty and IDI have additional rules for the use of artificial intelligence and self-plagiarism. See below.

When you submit your thesis, you must also submit a form explaining how you have used artificial intelligence in your work. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the form before you start working on your thesis so that you can make a note of what you have used along the way.

Declaration of AI aids (PDF form from the IE faculty).

As an NTNU student, you can find information abiut tools and responsible use of artificial intelligence on Innsida under "Hvordan bruke kunstig intelligens som student" (How to use artificial intelligence as a student) (Only in Norwegian at the moment, March 2025)

If you have questions about the form for declaration of AI aids, you can contact the deputy head of department for education Rune Hjelsvold.

If you choose to write a master's thesis based on the work from your specialization/preparatory project, it is important that you are aware of how you use material from the project in the thesis, you can read about this in the note from the Study program managers for Computer Science and Informatics on self-plagiarism (PDF note from IDI).

If you have questions about the note on self-plagiarism, you can contact the study program manager for Informatics (Dag Svanæs) or the study program manager for Computer Science (Patrick Mikalef).

Submitting the Master's Thesis

The deadline for submitting the master's thesis is 20 weeks after the start date, with an additional week for Christmas or Easter.

If the submission date falls on a weekend or public holiday, the submission will be on the following working day.

The master's thesis is submitted in Inspera.

Read more about submission at: "Submitting bachelor and master thesis - for students" (Innsida)

Position at NTNU

If you have a part-time position at NTNU, you may be granted an extension of the submission deadline based on the number of hours in your NTNU contract.

In Case of Illness

In case of illness, the submission deadline is extended corresponding to the period of illness. Illness must be documented with a medical certificate/sick note. The documentation cannot be sent by email but must be presented at the IDI reception at Holtermannsveien 2, 3rd floor, or sent by postal mail to "NTNU, Department of Computer Science, 7491 Trondheim."

Writing a Master's Thesis Abroad

Practical conditions at foreign universities, such as the academic year's division and similar factors, can grant an extended submission deadline of up to 6 weeks.

To apply for an extension of the submission deadline due to one or more of the points above, contact the academic administration at IDI: studier@idi.ntnu.no.

If you are delayed due to technical problems with the thesis/equipment or other circumstances, you can apply for an extended deadline.

Informatics and Digital Transformation: You can apply for an extension twice. You can apply for a total extension of up to 6 weeks (this does not apply if the extension is due to illness).

Computer Science: There is no limit to the number of times you can apply for an extension.

A written application for an extension should be sent to the IE faculty (studier@ie.ntnu.no) after agreement with your supervisor. Written documentation or explanation, as well as a new plan for completion, is required.

If you do not meet the submission deadline without having applied for and been granted an extension, your master's thesis will be graded "F" (fail).

If your thesis is graded "F" (fail) or you did not submit it by the deadline, you can notify the IE faculty within 3 months that you wish to resubmit the thesis. The department, in consultation with your supervisor and examiner, will then assess whether it is possible to revise the master's thesis or if a new thesis must be prepared.

You will be given 10 weeks to revise your master's thesis. If you need to write a new thesis, you will be given 20 weeks.

You have two attempts to pass the master's thesis (first submission + revision/new thesis).
