Project and budget in parallel
In order to create an excellent application, it is important to begin thinking about the budget early on the application process. The project’s content and budget are closely correlated and must be worked on in parallel. If not, you risk having to rewrite much of the application’s content as the budget takes shape.

Coordinator applications
Contact the EU financial officer at least 3 months before the application deadline
When you – on behalf of NTNU – coordinate an EU application, it is necessary to plan the budget in connection with the development of the application. In order to have enough time to carry out the necessary procedures (including budget approval) in the budgeting process of your application: Please contact the EU financial officer for your institute at least 3 months before the application deadline.
Consequences of late contact
If you contact your EU financial officer less than 3 months before the application deadline, there is an increased risk that the necessary procedures for budgeting of your application can not be completed and that the EU financial officers are already fully booked with other tasks. There will be a real danger that the EU financial officer will not be able to assist your application, or only provide very limited assistance. We emphasize that any errors in the budget for this reason could be a problem not only for your department and NTNU, but also for other project partners. It could lead to significant additional work and costs to correct any errors in the future if the application with minimal to no assistance from the EU group is still submitted and granted.
Partner applications
Contact the EU financial officer at least 3 weeks before the application deadline
When you – on behalf of NTNU – are a partner in an EU applicataion, the deadline for contacting an EU financial officer is at least 3 weeks before the application deadline.
Consequences of late contact
If you contact your EU financial officer less than 3 weeks before the application deadline, there is an increased risk that the necessary procedures for budgeting for your application can not be completed. This in turns leads to the risk that the department is not given sufficient time to assess and apporve the internal budget for the application.
ERC applications
Contact the EU financial officer at least 2 months before the application deadline
When you – with NTNU as the hosting organization – are to apply for ERC grant, it is necessary to plan the budget in connection with the development of the application. In order to have enough time to carry out the necessary procedures (including budget approval) in the budgeting process of your application, we ask that the EU financial officer for your department to be contacted at least 2 months before the application deadline.
Consequences of late contact
If you contact an EU financial officer less than 2 months before the application deadline, there is an increased risk that the necessary procedures for budgeting of your application will not be completed and the the EU financial officers are already fully bookeed with other tasks.
