We aim to facilitate your career and competence development — both because NTNU needs you to have up-to-date and relevant expertise to carry out your tasks, and so that you can help us evolve in line with ongoing changes. At the same time, it is important to us that you experience engagement, motivation, and a sense of mastery in your everyday work.

Your Role and Responsibility

You play the most important role in your own career. What goals and ambitions do you have as a manager at NTNU?

As a manager, it is important that you take a conscious and active approach to your ongoing development. What career development means to you depends on the type of position you hold and the tasks you are responsible for. The same applies to skills/competence development. The competencies relevant for you to develop depend on your leadership role, the future needs of your unit, and your own aspirations and ambitions.

As a manager at NTNU, we therefore expect you to:

  • have a desire to grow and develop
  • familiarize yourself with the competence needs of the organization and your unit
  • reflect on your own development needs
  • be willing to share your knowledge and expertise with others

Different arenas for development

The appraisal interview

The appraisal interview is the most important arena for discussing with your manager your aspirations, the needs of your unit, and the relevant measures for your skills and career development going forward.

It is important that you prepare thoroughly. You can find information about what is expected of you and how to prepare on the Appraisal interview page.

Although the interview is a formal and important setting for discussing your development opportunities with your manager, you are of course welcome to initiate such conversations at any time. For example, opportunities may arise to participate in projects, or you might come across a course you’d like to attend. It is important that you take an active role in your own skills and career development.

Activities and measures

Competence development for you as a manager can take many forms. The types of learning activities or initiatives that are suitable for you will depend on the specific competencies you aim to develop. Examples of development initiatives include:

  • *NTNU’s Leadership development program* – Go to tab Competence and career development"
  • DFØ’s Employer portal (in Norwegian) – Subject pages for leaders on topics such as employee follow-up and relevant regulations for the public sector
  • Mentorship programs – Check with your manager to see what opportunities are available
  • Conferences, seminars, and gatherings
  • Participation in networks
  • Continuing and further education
