Extending your exchange period

(Videresendt fra Prolongation of exchange studies)

International exchange students accepted for a stay at NTNU may apply for a extension of their exchange, and may stay for up to 3 consecutive semesters. This page explains how.

Topic page: New international student

Are you an NTNU student wishing to go abroad on exchange? See Topic page about studying abroad | Pages labelled with study abroad

Deadlines

  • 1 December for the spring semester (extending from autumn)
  • 1 June for the autumn semester (extending from spring)

Requirements

The documentation needed to be approved for an extension varies depending on your academic intent for the upcoming semester. An outline of the requirements to receive a course and thesis/project work extension is outlined below.

There are no format requirements for the confirmations you need to upload. We accept letters, prints of emails, etc. If there are any issues with your documentation or if we require more information from you, we will contact you directly regarding this. Note that all documentation must be uploaded in the form - we will not accept any documents sent via email.

When applying to your home university for approval to extend your stay, you may wish to inform them that an extension of your stay will not affect the number of students your home university's is allowed to nominate to NTNU for the following semester.

Ordinary extension

  1. Confirmation from home university that you are allowed to extend your studies and that it will count as part of your degree.
  2. Six courses for pre-approval in order of priority. Remember to include both course code and name.

Extension for thesis-writing/project work (new/continuing)

  1. Confirmation from home university that you are allowed to extend your studies and that it will count as part of your degree.
  2. Confirmation from your supervisor at NTNU. This must include the following:
    • Confirmation of their position as your supervisor
    • The duration you are planning to be at NTNU for, if those dates exceed the ordinary semester dates (see Academic Calendar for dates)
    • Whether credits will be awarded at NTNU or your home university
    • The course(s) you will be enrolled in at NTNU as part of the dissertation-writing, if this is the case.
Please note: If start of the writing/research/project is after the course registration deadline in the coming semester, your supervisor will instead have to request your registration as a placement student.

Application procedures

Submit the required documentation in the Mobility Extension request form:

Mobility Extenstion Request

You will receive a confirmation by email that your request has been received and will be processed as soon as possible. Please note that this could take up to three weeks.

Requests submitted past the deadline of the ongoing semester will not be considered.

Other considerations

Housing

New students arriving in the upcoming semester are prioritised by Sit to receive student housing. This means that you are not guaranteed student housing if your contract expires at the end of the current semester.

Be aware that there are not enough available places on NTNU's housing quota to extend contracts from the spring semester to the autumn.

Visa

Non-EU/EEA/Switzerland citizens are required to have a study permit while studying in Norway. As the validity of the visa aligns with the student’s initial mobility duration, you will have to apply for renewal of your study permit.

The Norwegian Directorate for Immigration (UDI) require incoming students with citizenship from non-EU/EEA/EFTA countries to be enrolled in a minimum of 30 ECTS/credits per semester in Norway to be eligible for a student visa/ study permit. The same goes for receiving a renewal of your visa.

Students who are not citizens of the EU/EEA/Switzerland, and who will not be taking credits at NTNU, will not be granted a visa renewal, even with given an admission/acceptance letter from NTNU.

Reporting your move

If you are now staying for more than 6 months in total, you might be required to report your move to Skatteetaten. For more information, please see the Norwegian Tax Authority's pages.
