Windows 11 is the latest version of Microsoft's operating system, and it comes with a range of new features and improvements. This guide will help you get started and make the most of the new features.

Getting Started

Startup and Login

When you start Windows 11 for the first time, you will be prompted to log in with your NTNU-account. This gives you access to all Microsoft services, Microsoft 365 apps, Teams, OneDrive, and more.

Background image

The PC is set up with a standard NTNU background image. You can change the background image to whatever you want.

Change Background Image:

To change the background image in Windows 11, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click on the desktop and select Personalize.
  2. In the Personalization window, click on Background.
  3. Under Customize your background, select Picture, Solid color, or Slideshow from the dropdown menu.
  4. If you choose Picture, you can either select one of the predefined images or click Browse to find an image on your computer.
  • NTNU backgrounds can be found under C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\NTNU
  • Select the desired image and adjust the Choose a fit settings (Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, Center, Span) according to your preferences.

Start Menu

The Start menu has a new design and is now centered on the screen. You can customize it by pinning apps and organizing them into groups.

Taskbar

The taskbar has also been updated.

Key Features

Search, add, and group apps in the Start menu

To search for apps, click the Start button and start typing the name of the app in the search bar. Results will appear automatically.

To add apps to the Start menu:

  1. Click All to see a list of all installed apps.
  2. Right-click the app you want to add and select Pin to Start.
  • You can also choose Pin to taskbar. You can drag and drop apps to the desired position in the Start menu. If you drop an app on top of another, they will form a group.

Move the Start menu to the left orientation

If you prefer to have the Start menu on the left side, you can easily change this:

  1. Right-click the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
  2. Scroll down and click Taskbar alignment.
  3. Change Taskbar alignment from Centered to Left.

Windows Snap:

Windows Snap is a feature that helps you organize windows on the screen. You can use Snap Layouts by hovering over the maximize button on a window. There you will see several layout options that you can choose to place the window in a specific part of the screen. This makes it easy to work with multiple apps simultaneously.

Tabs in File Explorer

Windows 11 introduces tabs in File Explorer, making it easier to navigate between multiple folders and files without opening multiple windows. To use tabs, you can:

  • Click on the plus icon (or "New tab") next to an existing tab.
  • Use the shortcut Ctrl + T to open a new tab.
  • Right-click on a folder and select "Open in new tab".

Sign out

To sign out of Windows 11, you can use one of the following methods:

Start Menu:

  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Click on your profile picture at the bottom left.
  3. Select Sign out.

Ctrl + Alt + Del:

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del simultaneously.
  2. Select Sign out from the menu that appears.

Productivity Tips

Keyboard Shortcuts

Windows 11 has several useful keyboard shortcuts that can help you work more efficiently:

  • Windows key + A: Opens quick settings.
  • Windows key + S: Opens the search function.
  • Windows key + D: Shows the desktop.
  • Windows key + Z: Opens Snap Layouts.
  • Ctrl + T: Opens a new tab in File Explorer.
  • Ctrl + W: Closes the active tab in File Explorer.

OneDrive

Use OneDrive to store files in the cloud and access them from any device. You get 50 GB of free storage with your Microsoft account.

Security and Updates

Windows Update

Ensure your system is always up to date by going to Settings > Windows Update. Here you can check for available updates and install them.

Windows Security

Windows 11 comes with built-in security that protects against viruses and malware. You can manage security settings by going to Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
