NTNUs competence matrix - Kunnskapsbasen
NTNUs competence matrix
NTNU's competence matrix is a tool for applicants and those involved in academic assessment and decision-making processes in connection with appointment, transfer and promotion to positions, as well as applications for research funding and other academic resources. It can also be used as a tool for competence and career development (career plan).
Norsk versjon: NTNUs kompetansematrise
NTNU aims to promote the quality and impact of research as well as strengthen the quality and relevance of its educational portfolio through responsible assessment of research and recognition of a wider range of academic results and activities in accordance with NTNU's societal mission (cf. NTNU's membership obligations in CoARA - Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment).
"Not everyone should do everything" (cf. UHR NOR-CAM). The competence matrix is not a checklist, but provides examples of qualifications, results and experiences that may be relevant in an overall competence assessment in the following areas:
a) Academic qualifications – research, artistic work and academic development work
b) Educational competence
c) Applied knowledge – innovation, dissemination and interaction with society
d) Academic leadership and roles of trust
e) Other competence – language and professional competence
The examples in the competence matrix are not exhaustive. Which competences are most relevant, e.g. for appointment and promotion, will depend on the level of the position, the subject area and the position's competence profile (cf. the advertisement text and career track). UHR KU-CAM offers examples of artistic competence (Norwegian only). The Universities Norway (UHR) guideline for "førstelektor" and "dosent", includes a competence matrix for this career track.
The matrix invites applicants to emphasize what they have done and achieved in different areas of expertise, as well as quality, development and breadth of activities and results. It provides examples of results and competences in five areas of competence and how these can be documented. The applicant can document their competence and results, for example, by referring to information in the CV, links to websites, data in the Norwegian Research Information Depository (Nasjonalt vitenarkiv - NVA), attachments to the application, or documents that can be presented on request.
The matrix also provides tips for the applicant's reflection and assessment of their results and competences and their use of scientific and experience-based knowledge. The applicant's reflection note will be included in the basis for assessing applications for appointment, transfer and promotion to academic positions at NTNU. The reflection topics may also be relevant in connection with the interview of applicants. The reflection note should not exceed 3-10 pages. A pedagogical portfolio must be submitted for positions with requirements for educational competence.
