Use of reMarkable at NTNU
reMarkable is a digital notebook that allows you to collect, organize, and categorize notes, as well as read and annotate PDFs. Additionally, reMarkable can connect to the internet and has functionality for cloud synchronization. However, due to the lack of a data processing agreement and encryption, this functionality leads to breaches of NTNU’s information security guidelines.
Therefore, a routine has been established for the correct setup of reMarkable. This routine may change if reMarkable’s security mechanisms improve.
1. reMarkable should not be connected to a reMarkable Cloud account
There are several reasons for this. Firstly, it is not possible to disable synchronization with reMarkable’s own cloud. We do not have a data processing agreement with reMarkable and therefore cannot use their systems for storage. Secondly, reMarkable does not have disk encryption. Synchronization with OneDrive would result in encrypted documents in OneDrive being stored unencrypted on reMarkable.
As long as the device is not connected to reMarkable Cloud, integrations with other cloud storage solutions like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive will not work either.
2. A PIN must be set on reMarkable for use in a work context
With the correct setup, reMarkable can be used for up to internal information. See NTNU’s storage guide.
This also leads to requirements for storage according to NTNU’s information security policies (Policy for Securing Personal ICT Equipment and Policy for Access Control).
