Student voting rights and constituencies

Students have the right to vote at the units that are responsible for:

  • the study programme(s) to which they have been admitted and
  • the courses they are registered for in the semester in question.

NTNU's electronic election system (valgweb) retrieves updated data from NTNU's common student data system (FS) based on students' study rights and unit affiliations. If you chose a constituency when you registered for the semester on Studentweb, you will still be listed in the register of voters for all units where you have study rights. Employed student representatives, will be registered in the election system as students.

If you are unsure where you have the right to vote, you can log on to valgweb with your usual NTNU username and password. It is not possible to appeal your listing in Valgweb.

Formal student elections can be arranged at the earliest after the semester registration deadline on 15 September and 1 February. This applies to the election of:

  • members of the Student Parliament at NTNU
  • student members of the NTNU board
  • faculty representatives (FTV) (representing the students on the Faculty Board)
  • department representatives (IVT) (representing the students in the Department Board or extended management group)

Staff voting rights and constituencies

Employees have the right to vote at the unit where they have their main position:

  • Permanent and temporary staff must have at least a full-time equivalency of at least a 50 % position to have the right to vote.
  • Professors and associate professors in at least a 20 % position at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences have the right to vote in local elections.

NTNU's electronic election system (election web) retrieves updated data daily from NTNU's payroll and personnel system (DFØ). You may only belong to one voter group (permanent academic staff, temporary academic staff, technical-administrative staff). In NTNU's election system (valgweb), you are granted the right to vote in the voter group where you have your main position. Students who satisfy the criteria to vote as employees, will be registered in the election system as employees. When you have cast a vote, it is final and will not be affected by the daily updates of the electoral register.

If you are unsure where or in what voter category you have the right to vote, you can log on to valgweb with your usual NTNU username and password. You should check your listing when the elections are announced. It is not possible to appeal your listing via Valgweb. If you believe that you are listed incorrectly, you should immediately contact the head of your unit. Only managers can submit corrections via NTNU Help to NTNU's Payroll and HR-Services Section.
