Software available to the Department of Electric Energy
The software available to the Department of Electric Energy is offered on two different platforms. The reason for this is that the platforms have different characteristics and perform differently depending on the intended use.

| Programfarm |
With NTNU’s Programfarm, students and employees get access to a wide range of Windows applications without having to install them on their own computers. This is especially useful if you are using macOS or Linux, or when you need to run long computations and simulations. Please note that the Programfarm does not support graphics acceleration (GPU), and OneDrive is not available in this service. If you are outside NTNU’s campus network, you must connect via VPN to access the Programfarm. |
| Virtual desktop (VDI) |
The Virtual Desktop is based on Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop and works largely in the same way as the Programfarm, but with some important differences. The service supports graphics acceleration (GPU), which provides a better experience for software that requires visual performance. The Virtual Desktop is not suitable for very long sessions and should not be used for sessions lasting more than 8 hours. |

Use the connection called Ielfarm, Oerstedfarm or Teslafarm.

Virtual desktop
There are two ways to connect to the Virtual Desktop (VDI) - either through a web browser or via the client application. The best experience and graphics performance are achieved by using the client.
