Firesafety at EPT
Familiarize yourself with what to do in case of a fire at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT). It is important to know the fire procedures and instructions related to the building you are in.

Fire Alarm in Varmeteknisk and Strømningsteknisk
Ad hoc area leader
In Varmeteknisk and Strømningsteknisk, we have an ad hoc area leader for fire alarms. This means that the first person to arrive at the evacuation station when the fire alarm is triggered should put on the vest, pick up the action card, and search the area indicated on the card. We have evacuation stations at the exits in all hallways.
- Put on the vest
- Bring the action card
- Carry out the tasks listed on the action card
- Once the area has been searched, go to the front of Kjelhuset and report on your area
- When the building is cleared, return the vest and action card to their place
Fire alarm in Varmeteknisk
There are two types of fire alarms: lab alarm and general alarm, based on zones in Varmeteknisk.
Lab alarm
The lab alarm is triggered automatically when detection occurs in the lab. Note: In some cases, detection in the lab may directly trigger a general alarm (see point 2 below).
- Fire alarm message from speakers: "Et automatisk varsel om brann blir undersøkt, avvent nærmere beskjed. A fire warning is being investigated, await further announcement".
- Following this, a message will be broadcasted in the lab and nearby areas: "Brannalarmen er utløst, forlat bygget. Bruk de oppmerkede rømningsveiene, heisene må ikke brukes. This is a firealarm, leave the building. Use the emergency exits, do not use the elevators".
- Simultaneously, an announcement will be broadcasted in the office areas: "Et automatisk varsel om brann blir undersøkt, avvent nærmere beskjed. A fire warning is being investigated, await further announcement".
- Lab managers (SINTEF/NTNU) have 3 minutes to reset the lab alarm on the fire panel if the fire is not real. If the lab alarm is not reset, it automatically activates a general alarm, resulting in a complete evacuation of the building. Therefore, it is important to inform the lab managers early if any information about the alarm is known.
General Alarm: Full evacuation of the building
- Fire alarm message: "Brannalarmen er utløst, forlat bygget. Bruk de oppmerkede rømningsveiene, heisene må ikke brukes. This is a firealarm, leave the building. Use the emergency exits, do not use the elevators".
- Message: "Normal tilstand er gjenopprettet, Faren er over. The firewarning is over, normal status is reestablished". This message will play when normal conditions have been restored.
A general alarm is triggered automatically:
- When detection occurs in the office areas
- When detection occurs in areas connected to or near the lab, including stairwells
- If a manual fire alarm is activated (red box near the door)
- If the lab alarm is not reset after 3 minutes
- If two detectors in the lab are activated simultaneously
- When flammable gases are detected in the lab, triggering a high gas alarm
- If detection occurs in the lab outside normal working hours
- If detection occurs in the lab from a detector above the ceiling
