Deposit account
Students from non-EU/non-EEA countries have to deposit funds into a Norwegian bank account to show they have sufficient financial funds to support themselves in Norway. This is a part of the application process for a residence permit.
Without a residence permit you cannot open a bank account in Norway. To solve this, NTNU has a deposit account where students can deposit funds to prove they have sufficient financial support.
The funds are transferred to a personal cash card. Cash card fee is NOK 600,- per card and is subject to change.
Instructions on how to transfer your deposit (PDF)
The Directorate of Immigration (UDI) dictates how much money needs to be deposited into this account to fulfil residency requirements.
On arrival
- Trondheim: The card is handed out after the Orientation Week. Information will be sent out during the Orientation Week. For appointments to pick up the cash card, later, send an email to arrivals@aud.ntnu.no. Bring your passport as ID.
- Ålesund or Gjøvik: You will receive and email with instructions for where you can pick up the card. Bring your passport as ID.
Students staying in Norway for less than 6 months
Students staying in Norway for one semester will normally not be able to open a bank account. The deposit will be put on their cash card. When you leave Norway you fill out an online form to get what is left on the card to your account abroad. See instructions on how to do this at the bottom of this page.
Staying in Norway for 2 semesters or more
Students receive a bank card with NOK 40,000 of their deposit during their first weeks at NTNU. When you have your residence permit and a Norwegian ID number/D-number, you may open a bank account. To get the remaining funds transferred to your new Norwegian account, you fill out an online form . See instructions on how to do this at the bottom of this page.
Please note that the process for obtaining a Norwegian bank account may take a few months.
