Deposit account
Students from non-EU/non-EEA countries have to deposit funds into a Norwegian bank account to show they have sufficient financial funds to support themselves in Norway. This is a part of the application process for a residence permit.
Unfortunately, without a residence permit you cannot open a bank account in Norway. To solve this dilemma, NTNU has opened a bank account where students can deposit funds to prove they have sufficient financial support.
Instructions for how to transfer your deposit (PDF)
The Directorate of Immigration (UDI) dictates how much money needs to be deposited into this account to fulfil residency requirements.
On arrival
- Trondheim: The card is normally handed out during the Orientation Week. If you arrive after Orientation Week, you can collect the bank card at the International House in Trondheim. Bring your passport as ID.
- Ålesund or Gjøvik: You will receive and email with instructions for where you can pick up the card. Bring your passport as proof of ID.
Students staying in Norway for less than 6 months
If you are staying in Norway for less than six months, you will not be able to open a bank account. The deposit you transferred to NTNU will be put on your cash card. When you leave Norway you fill out an online form to get what is left on the card to your account abroad. See instructions on how to do this at the bottom of this page.
Staying in Norway for more than 6 months
You will receive a bank card with NOK 40,000 of your deposit during your first weeks at NTNU.
When you have your residence permit and a Norwegian ID number/D-number, you can open a bank account. To get the remaining funds transferred to your new Norwegian account, you fill out an online form . See instructions on how to do this at the bottom of this page.
Please note that the process for obtaining a Norwegian bank account may take a few months.
