Setup of email account in Evolution

This is how you set up your email account, calendar and contacts in Evolution for Linux. This guide has been tested on Ubuntu than release 20.04 and Fedora than release 35. The steps are probably similar on other distros, as long as the version of Evolution is 3.36 or newer. The guide is valid for both students and employees who have been migrated to O365.

Note: The help desk (Orakel) doesn't offer support for Linux, and can't assist with trouble shooting outside what is mentioned in this guide.

Installing evolution-ews

To use Evolution with Office 365 you need the plugin evolution-ews. This plugin is available from your package manager:

Ubuntu

sudo apt install evolution-ews

Fedora

sudo dnf install evolution-ews

When this has been installed, you can follow the rest of this guide.

Setup

  1. Start Evolution.
  2. If you haven't added any e-mail account yet, the setup wizard will start automatically, otherwise you can go to File - New - Mail Account.
  3. Choose "Next" until you reach the tab "Identity", where you can enter your name and email address. Enter your name and your full email address from NTNU. The rest of the fields can be left blank. Remove the check mark for "Look up mail server details based on the entered e-mail address". Choose "Next".
  4. At the tab "Receiving Email" you need to enter the following details
    • Server Type: Exchange Web Services
    • Username: fullemail@ntnu.no (usually firstname.lastname@ntnu.no for employees and username@stud.ntnu.no for students)
    • Host URL: https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx
    • Authentication: OAuth2 (Office365)
    • If you're unable to push "Next" after choosing Oauth2 as the authentication method, you have to tick the box "Override Office365 OAuth2 settings" and enter the following details:
      • Tenant: common
      • Application ID: 20460e5d-ce91-49af-a3a5-70b6be7486d1
      • Redirect URI: https://login.microsoftonline.com/common/oauth2/nativeclient
  5. At the tab "Receiving Options" you don't have to change any options, but "Check for new messages in all folders" can be useful.
  6. Finish the setup wizard. At this point a login prompt from Feide should appear, asking for your NTNU user name and password, and prompt you for MFA. Complete this process as usual.
  7. If this error message appears: "Error performing TLS handshake: One of the involved algorithms has insufficient security level", you have to adjust the cryptography policy for your system:
    1. In a terminal, run the command: sudo update-crypto-policies --set LEGACY
    2. Reboot and restart Evolution, and the login prompt should appear.
