What is GitHub?

Git is widely used by developers and programmers to collaborate on projects. The advantage of version control is that you are able to keep track everything that has been done and can revert if any errors or bugs are discoveres.

GitHub is a Git tool that gives you a graphical overview of changes and contributions, in addition to other functionality for collaboration and sharing source code and results. GitHub is owned by Microsoft, and NTNU has been granted licenses for academic use and has set up its own instance of the software.

Guidelines for use

The service can be used for all research and teaching activities as well as technical use. The service can NOT be used for commercial activities, i.e. any type of activity that has profit or income, including commissioned research.

The service is approved for open (green) and internal (yellow) data. The service cannot be used for confidential (red) information. Examples include knowledge and research that is subject to export control and special categories of personal data (formerly called sensitive personal data), including health information. For a more detailed description, see also Policy for Classification of Information Assets at NTNU.

When you leave NTNU

Like all other information stored in NTNU's systems, private repos are deleted when you, as an employee, terminate your employment, or when you, as a student, terminate your studies at NTNU. Legal requirements entail that NTNU is obliged to delete all private data no later than 6 months after termination of employment/study. It is therefore important that you keep all information you want to take with you or ensure that others take over relevant repos.
