What is AppsAnywhere?

AppsAnywhere is a web portal that gives all students access to applications and frequently used web services they need, from any device. Students and staff do not need to download and install applications but get them directly through AppsAnywhere. You can access programs anywhere, anytime, on or off-campus.

What is the URL of AppsAnywhere?

Use the URL apps.ntnu.no to visit AppsAnywhere. You can start the installation after signing in for the first time.

What are my AppsAnywhere credentials?

Use your NTNU username and password to sign in to AppsAnywhere.

How do I install AppsAnywhere? And why do I have to?

Watch the video or follow the installation instructions.

Mac and Windows users must install a small program from AppsAnywhere on their machine, which simplifies the download, launch and management of usage rights for the programs.

Can I double-click a data file in Windows Explorer, and launch an AppsAnywhere app that way?

Yes, on Windows, an AppsAnywhere-supplied Windows application works just like a manually installed application, including double-clicking to launch it. Windows users also get a utility called Cloudpaging player, which supports starting programs directly on their own Windows machine from AppsAnywhere, without the need to download the software first and then installing it.

Can I double-click a data file in the Finder on a Mac and launch an AppsAnywhere app that way?

No. You must download the application, and install it (if it is indeed available for Mac)

Why are there several types of start buttons? Which one should I choose?

In general, there is only one start option (Start). If you press 'Start', AppsAnywhere will start applications in the assumed best way for you based on the type of machine you have, what connection to NTNU you have, etc.

The following alternatives are available for the time being. If a drop-down arrow is present to the right of Start, this indicates that multiple start options are available:

  • Start: Streams down to your machine first time, and runs locally then and the next time. Be careful if you have the same program installed locally.
  • Start : As for Start, but requires VPN in addition
  • Download: For local installation on your machine

Can I put AppsAnywhere apps in Blackboard and other web systems, and in teaching materials and notes?

Go to an app in the portal. Click on the "up box" "as shown here. Copy the link. Paste the link in Blackboard, or wherever you want to put it. The link allows the user to read the application description and start the application by pressing ‘Start’ (or other start options).

Do I need VPN?

Yes, you need VPN to run licensed software, such as Solidworks or Granta Edupack on your own Windows machine. Macs and other types of devices receive these applications via server and therefore do not need a VPN.

Using AppsAnywhere

Favourite Apps

Apps in AppsAnywhere can be favourited by hovering the mouse over an app and clicking on the heart icon. You can see your favourites from any device by clicking on "Favourites" on the left in the menu at ntnu.apps.no

Create and Edit Apps List.

App lists can be an effective way for people to designate and share specific sets of apps for a course or group. This can be useful if you want to share a comprehensive list of all the software relevant to the courses in a single link.

At NTNU you can consider using Blackboard Learn for links to AppsAnywhere applications from your course, see ((link to section above)).

  1. Hover over your image at the top right and select "Apply".
  2. Under "My App Lists", click "Add New List" or the list you want to edit.
  3. Enter the name of the list and press “Create”.
  4. Add or remove apps as you wish, and press “Save”.
  5. You can also click on "Share list" to create a link to the app list that can be copied and pasted.
  6. Click "Done" when you have finished editing the app list.

Selecting language

In AppsAnywhere you can choose between Norwegian and English. There are two ways to select language:

  1. You can select a language when you log in with your NTNU account. Tap the drop-down menu to the right of the flag and select the language you want to use.
  2. You can change the language after logging in. Tap the person icon right at the top right and tap "Settings" in the drop-down menu. A box called "Preferences" will appear. Select language and press "Save".

What is Cloudpaging Player that appears on my Windows machine?

Cloudpaging player accepts Windows applications from AppsAnywhere. The applications almost immediately, and often when as little as 10% is received. It adds the application into Windows, without installing them.

Cloudpaging player lets you delete and launch applications from your Windows. Because the applications work as locally installed on Windows machines, you can start them as if they were installed, i.e., from the Start button / Type here to search.

What does AppsAnywhere install on my computer?

It installs the AppsAnywhere client on Windows and Mac computers, as well as Cloudpaging Player on Windows computers and Parallels on Mac. On Windows computers, the applications will act as if they were installed locally, and exceptionally have some items that should be installed on the computer, even after you have stopped using AppsAnywhere. This may be stated in the Description field.

Do I have to go to AppsAnywhere if I already have the application in Cloudpaging Player?

No. If you have already downloaded the software to your Cloudpaging Player in Windows, you can simply launch the program in two different ways: Enter the application name in the "Type here to apply" box in the lower-left corner of the screen. Click the Start button (or Start (local) in the AppsAnywhere portal to run the program.

How do I prevent Cloudpaging Player from running every time I start my computer?

By default, Cloudpaging Player will run in the background when Windows starts up. To prevent this and only run the player when you need it, follow these instructions:

Open Cloudpaging Player, click File, and then Options. On the General tab, clear the "Start Cloudpaging Player when Windows starts" check box

Do you want to start Cloudpaging player manually?

In Windows, go to "Type here to search" and enter "Cloudpaging". Then the Cloudpaging Player icon appears, tap this to start.

How do I remove an application from Cloudpaging Player?

Click on the application in Cloudpaging player that you want to remove. If the application is still running, make sure you have saved your work and press ‘Stop’. When it has stopped, right-click and select ‘Remove’. The application is then removed from the list.

Where can I request applications for AppsAnywhere?

Go to the forms to report errors and wishes. Submit requests for new applications, or access to applications.

Errors and troubleshooting

How can I help user support ("Brukersenteret") to find out what's wrong?

On Windows://

Persistent "validation errors", app will not start at all etc.: Copy files in "%localappdata%\software2" and "%temp%\software2" and send to support (you might do it together with logs there, see link).

App begins to start, but fails: Start "Cloudpaging player". Go to Log. View log. Copy text and send to support. Or go to C:\ProgramData\Endeavors Technologies\StreamingCore\Log, copy file, send to support.

Although the two above will help a lot, it might be that support even asks for the event logs; in this case, please start the Event viewer ("Hendelsesliste" in Norwegian language), do the following

Event Viewer logs also provide vital information on the state of the AppsAnywhere client, start this (type event in search field right to Windows symbol in lower left corner of Windows 10), go to Applications and Service Logs, right-click S2 in name (S2RequestClient, S2AppsAnywhere, S2Service, S2Updater) as well as AppsAnywhereExternalUpdater, open, and ""Save All Events as..." to files with same name, and send to support.

On Mac://

In Finder, Go, Go to Folder, /Library/Logs/Software2 (/Users/username/Library/Logs/Software2), copy all log files and send to support.

My session will not be approved

Try logging in and out again. If the issue still is not solved, report an error via NTNU Help.

Why do I have to validate the session?

By validating (approving) the session, AppsAnywhere will find out your location, the type of operating system you are running, and who you are. This information will notify AppsAnywhere of the software you are allowed to launch.

Some of the applications have started behaving strangely

Do you have Windows? Try restarting the machine. Do you have Mac? Stop the application and try both Start (via web) or Start (via server). Do you have an iPad, Android, Chromebook, or similar? Try stopping and restarting the application.

I am not able to stop and remove an application from Cloudpaging Player

In rare cases, it may appear as if a program is "stuck" in Cloudpaging Player, and it does not allow you to stop or remove it. If this happens, you will need to restart your computer (after saving your work), and the program will now let you stop it and remove it.

How do I remove an application from Cloudpaging Player

Click on the application in Cloudpaging Player that you want to remove. If the application is still running, make sure you have saved your work and press ‘Stop’. When it has stopped, right-click and select ‘Remove’. The application is then removed from the list.

An application I have in Cloudpaging Player does not respond

Stop and remove the current program and download it again.

Why are some applications unavailable off-campus?

Some applications are limited by the license and can therefore not be run when they are off-campus. Try starting VPN and try restarting the application.

What do I do if I get a notification saying that the application’s license has expired?

Try restarting the program. This refreshes the license.

Needs validation error

  • If you are seeing "need approval (validation)" under each app, it may be that the session is broken, and you need to log out and log in again.
  • It is also possible that the AppsAnywhere client and related services are not installed or stopped.
  • If you have installed the client, be sure to say yes to approval (validation) if you are asked. Without approval (validation) you will not be able to start apps.
  • If you have not yet installed AppsAnywhere, try and go to apps.ntnu.no again, and if you are offered to install the AppsAnywhere client, you must follow the installation instructions at the beginning of this guide.
  • If you are not offered to install the AppsAnywhere client, you can try accessing the portal from a private browser window and see if you are not offered then.
  • If you receive the error message Validation failed, see the help section below.

Validation failed error

  • If you received the “Validation Failed” error, please click “Retry” and ensure you have accepted the External Protocol request as recommended. If this did not work, try to sign off and in again.
  • If you are still receiving this error, please double check that your browser is fully updated, you have a functioning internet connection, and that you have installed AppsAnywhere using the installation instructions above.
  • If you are still receiving the error, please clear your cache and cookies in your browser (this may vary from browser to browser. Search for “how to delete cookies and clear your browser cache” or ask NTNU Help for assistance), reboot your computer, and try again.
  • If you continue to experience issues with validation – disable any Anti-Virus software on your computer. If you’re not sure how to disable your AV software, perform a google search for “temporarily disable ”.
  • In some situations, it may be easier to reset the browser to its default settings. Note that this will remove all stored passwords, caches, extensions, and browser settings.

    Reset Google Chrome
    Reset FireFox

Validation failed error – M1 Macs

There is a known issue for users on Apple computers with M1 processors (any model released since late 2020) that will cause them to receive the Validation Failed error.

Due to changes in Apple architecture, Rosetta must be installed for the AppsAnywhere client to run. This can be resolved by manually launching AppsAnywhere from /Applications/Software2/AppsAnywhere.app which will prompt to install Rosetta.

You may need to reboot after the installation. If you are still receiving the Validation Failed error after installing Rosetta, please follow the troubleshooting steps in the Validation Failed error above.

Some applications are appearing as unavailable

An application will appear unavailable if your device doesn’t meet the requirements to run it. Some applications can only be installed on NTNU-owned computers or may only be available on-campus. An application will also appear unavailable if it is incompatible with your device’s operating system.

To review these requirements:

  1. Visit https://apps.ntnu.no and click on the desired app to get more information about the app.
  2. Select the “Delivery Methods” tab, optionally clicking your preferred delivery. method, then click “Restrictions” to view requirements and explanations.
  3. If you believe an application is incorrectly appearing as unavailable, please contact NTNU Help.

Some applications are missing for me

If an application doesn’t appear in the available or unavailable sections of AppsAnywhere, and you know that others are able to see the application, it’s possible that your NTNU affiliation does not permit access to the application. If you believe you should be able to view the application, please contact NTNU Help.

What can AppsAnywhere do to my computer after it is installed?

The AppsAnywhere client and related background services can install and launch applications that you launch from the web portal at apps.ntnu.no. This normally requires no administrator access or special privileges.

Does AppsAnywehere do things to my computer without notifying me

All activity is performed with user initiation, alerts, or approval.

What information does AppsAnywhere collect from my computer and about the use of AppsAnywhere?

For iPad, Chromebook, and similar devices, it is registered on the AppsAnywhere server at NTNU that an application has been started and that it is running. This is to ensure that license rights etc. can be enforced and for quality assurance of the service. In addition, NTNU can end the run if you need help with error correction, or because you no longer have the right to run the program.

For Windows and Mac devices, logs are created locally on your own computer about usage. This is not automatically transferred to NTNU. You can send this over manually to support, if you are asked to do so, as part of the troubleshooting.

Can AppsAnywhere manage othere aspects of my computer?

No. But NTNU may add functions over time, which you as a user may have to choose to start yourself. You will be informed about what the service entails through the description of the service (see "Description" in the web portal).
