The writing process

The writing process

From the moment you start planning until you have a finished text, you go through a writing process. Nobody writes a perfect text in their first attempt, and you will probably have to go through multiple rounds of revision before your text is finished. While you are working on and revising your text, it can be a good idea to get feedback from others, such as from in a writing group.

Writing a text that is going to be read by others can be challenging, and it is important not to give up, even if you encounter writer’s block or other obstacles along the way. When you finally reach that point where you are happy with your text and you feel ready to hand it in, it is a good idea to go over it again to make sure you have remembered to include everything – from content to formatting.

Revising your text

Revising your text can often help you improve it, and make it more readable. As you write, you develop a better understanding of the content, and see things that need changing.

Revision is an important part of writing a text, and it is material to the writing process. Having to rewrite a text does not mean you are a bad writer. On the contrary, it means that you are able to see the text from the reader’s perspective, and recognize its strengths and weaknesses.

  • adding elements that are missing
  • rearranging the different parts of the text
  • changing how we frame topics
  • clarifying things that are unclear
  • changing various words and wordings
  • removing parts that are no longer relevant

Asking questions about the text

When you start revising your text, you should ask yourself some questions:

  • What am I trying to say here?
  • What do I have to do to help the reader understand what I want to say?
  • How can I improve this text?
