Researchers in the public debate
Researchers are the most important voices that NTNU has in the public debate. NTNU's expert lists are one of several tools for reaching the media. This page has information about what it means to have your name in the expert lists.
Norsk versjon: Forskere i samfunnsdebatten
Why join?
There are many good reasons to disseminate research in the media. As a researcher, you can contribute to a knowledge-based debate, and you can reach far more people than you otherwise do.
In a world where «fake news» is becoming more and more widespread, research-based knowledge is a crucial counterweight.
Effective communication and visibility through the media can contribute to recruiting skilled employees and students. They make the academic environments an attractive partner for working life and knowledge institutions nationally and internationally.
Through increased visibility, you can also gain new contacts and contracts.
Increased interest from the media
The media often want to highlight researcher voices and knowledge-based opinions. Here are a few examples of increased interest from the media:
The research website Forskning.no (in Norwegian) has had explosive growth since its launch in 2007. Many media obtain material from here.
In recent years, Dagens Næringsliv (DN) has devoted more space to a broader public debate. DN often uses researchers to shed light on current topics and provides tips and advice to researchers who want to communicate (in Norwegian).
What does it mean to be on the expert lists?
You want to convey knowledge to a general, broad audience.
You want to contribute to and influence public debate with knowledge-based opinions.
You will be available for the media to contact you about your scientific field.
The journalist may not need or want to interview you immediately, but needs to know whether you are available for an interview, and if so, when. For example, you might make an interview appointment for the next day.
If you do not have the opportunity or do not want to be interviewed, it is still helpful to reply so that the journalist is aware of this. If you have a colleague who could provide insight on the topic, you could pass on their name to the journalist.
