This page describes NICE-2, a service for storing, analyzing and processing research data that requires extra security. NICE-2 has been developed as part of the Research Data Project, and is now gradually introduced at NTNU.

Note: User fees will be introduced for projects with greater storage needs, specialized software, etc.

Can I use NICE-2?

NICE-2 has been developed by the IT department at NTNU, to address needs not covered by other solutions. NICE-2 is particularly suitable for qualitative data and smaller, internal research projects and student assignments. Here you can both store and work with research data and other types of data in secure project areas, with a selection of available software. NICE-2 is approved for confidential (red) data, and is well suited for students who use their own PC.

Login

You must register DUO two-factor authentication before you can access NICE-2. Activate DUO here. Click register device, log in with BankID.

After registering, you can log in to NICE-2. Select Entra ID and click LOG IN.

Apply for a new project area

Order a project area by filling out the form at APPLY FOR NEW PROJECT STORAGE. Research Data @NTNU will contact you if there is a need for clarification on whether this service meets your needs.

NB! Supervisors must apply for project areas on behalf of students.

Adding members to the project area

Only employees and students at NTNU can be added as members. It is recommended that you search by e-mail address.

External users must have an NTNU user. See Guest Service.

Choose whether the member should be a User or Administrator. Only Administrators can add members.

Connect to the project area

1. Download rdp file by clicking CONNECT and DOWNLOAD RDP FILE.
2. Open the file in Downloads with file explorer.
3. Press Yes if asked for certificate.
4. Open the DUO app on your mobile and approve login.

Note: if you are not on campus (on the NTNU network) you must connect to VPN to be able access your NICE-2 project area.

Upload files to the project area

Via website

1. Click UPLOAD. Drag and drop your files or press Browse and select files from a folder.

2. Click CONFIRM.

3. The files you upload will be available under data (E:).

4. If you have a file structure you want to preserve, or have more than ten files, we recommend using 7-zip to save and upload the .zip file.

Via WinSCP

1. Install and open *WinSCP*.
2. Enter Hostname: filegw."Shortname from NICE-2".nice2.iaas.ntnu.no Port number: 22, Username: "username"@ntnu.no
3. You can click Save to make it easier to log in next time. We recommend not filling in your password, but typing it in each time you are asked.
4. Click Log in.
5. Click Accept if you are asked to "Continue connecting to an unknown server and adding the host key to a cache?"

Exporting files from the project area

Export must be done via WinSCP.

Automatic transcription based on Whisper from OpenAI and the National Library is also available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What limitations are set on the project area?

It is not possible to cut and paste between your PC and the project room. This ensures that exporting data from the project area is an active choice, using WinSCP.

There is limited support for video streaming from the project room, e.g. stuttering during playback. We are working on finding a better solution.

Can I change the window size of the project area?

The virtual PC (project area) is set by default to fill your entire screen. If you want it to only appear as a window, you can easily adjust this. Right-click on the rdp file you downloaded, select Show more options, select Edit, select the Display tab, adjust the Display configuration to the desired size.
